Uncontrolled bleeding is the #1 cause of preventable death from trauma. Watch how proper tourniquet application and wound packing can save a life.
Three Techniques That Save Lives
The Stop The Bleed program teaches three critical hemorrhage control methods. Knowing when and how to apply each can mean the difference between life and death.
Apply Pressure
For wounds where a tourniquet cannot be used (torso, neck, groin), apply direct pressure with gauze or a clean cloth and maintain it until EMS arrives.
Pack the Wound
For deep wounds, pack hemostatic gauze tightly into the wound cavity, then apply firm pressure. The hemostatic agent accelerates clotting at the source.
Apply a Tourniquet
For severe extremity bleeding (arms or legs), apply a C-A-T tourniquet 2-3 inches above the wound, tighten the windlass until bleeding stops, and note the time.
C-A-T Tourniquet Application
The Combat Application Tourniquet (C-A-T) is the gold standard for stopping life-threatening extremity bleeding. Watch this official demonstration from North American Rescue on proper one-handed application of the Gen 7 C-A-T.
